English Language Arts B10 course consists of two units of study. Through essays, poems, short stories, novels, movies, plays and various other media, students will gain more knowledge surrounding the theme of the first unit: "Equity & Ethics". Sub-topics include: "Justice & Fairness", "What is Right?" and "Empowerment". The Shakespearean play The Merchant of Venice is studied in this unit as well as an autobiography of the students' choice about someone who has experienced inequalities in their life.
"The World Around Us & Within Us" is the second unit of study which includes the ideas of "Natural & Constructed Worlds", Individuals & Communities", "Stewardship" and "Universality of Being". Students will enjoy the Native Gothic novel The Night Wanderer by Drew Hayden Taylor. This novel is both reflective of a "constructed world" and of "universality of being" human.
Not only will the students be taking in these literary creations, they will create their own as well. They will express their thoughts, ideas and solutions regarding the above themes by participating in speeches, forums, presentations, writing letters, scripts, obituaries and creating brochures, poetry, journal entries and projects.
